Warm Autumn is dominantly warm in hue with muted chroma as its subordinate colour quality. This means their best colours are warm tints (mixed with yellow to warm and grey to soften).
They also have a moderate to high contrast level so, when it comes to makeup, they need to be choosing complementary colour combinations. Think powder finishes, neutral eyes and matte salmon lipsticks.
In a nutshell, Warm Autumn makeup is gentle and inviting with a little depth. It differs to its Spring counterpart in its softness but is no less radiant in warmth.
Please remember that the following recommendations contain affiliate links and are generic to all Warm Autumn individuals. Depending on your depth and chroma, you may need variations of these colours and products. For personalised advice, please purchase a Colour Analysis package with a makeup option.
Complexion
Warm Spring complexions range from fair to dark in value and are either bronze or golden. They also tend to have naturally matte or sheer complexions. These three factors need to be repeated in complexion makeup to create balance.
We recommend having your skin tone professionally matched at a beauty counter. Therefore, some products may not be available in your personal shade. However, we have included the following product suggestions below to help you select suitable alternatives.
Primer
Primers help to create a smooth base and prevent complexion products caking on skin. Warm Spring types should use products with buzzwords such as "mattifying" in the name. A great example is SmashBox Photo Finish Control Mattifying Primer.
Foundation & concealer
We always recommend getting colour-matched by a professional but generally golden or bronze-based foundations in matte or satin finishes tend to work best. We recommend products such as Clarins Everlasting Foundation 30ml and L'oreal Paris Infalliable Concealer as base products.
Contour
Due to Autumn's soft influence, sparkly highlighters and bronzers are not recommended for this subtype as we need to keep shine to a minimum. You can, however, use foundations or concealers in a lighter and darker shades to create areas of light and dark across your appearance. We recommend two or three varying shades of Maybelline Concealer Instant Anti Age Eraser Eye Concealer.
Setting Spray
Setting sprays increases the longevity of makeup. Like other complexion products, those with "mattifying" in the name are best suited to Warm Autumn. Try Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray.
Eyes
We typically recommend colours which are similar in either hue or value for eye product blends. However, depending on your individual depth, you may be able to pull off higher contrast looks with your eyeshadow.
MASCARA
Black is not recommended to Warm Autumn as it is too overpowering. We instead advise dark browns and warm greys in voluminising styles. You could try Rimmel Extra Super Lash Mascara in 'brown-black' or GOSH Boombastic Crazy Mascara in 'classic grey'.
There are also some olive green and deep warm purple variations you can make use of such as 3INA MAKEUP Color Mascara and Maybelline New York, Sky High Lash Sensational Mascara in 'Burgundy Haze'.
Prep your lashes before application to avoid a clumpy result. We like Max Factor False Lash Effect Max Out Primer.
EYELINER
Any of the neutral or accent colours on the Warm Autumn palette are suitable but we generally recommend those in a medium depth.
The examples above show aubergine, medium brown and olive green. Remember to use these in tandem with mascara and eyeshadows that meet the advised colour combinations for Warm Autumn. For example, a brown eyeliner would pair well with brown mascara and matte green eyeshadow as these colours are similar in hue and value.
Colours we do not recommend include black, lilac and white. You can see how the white in the final example makes Amber look pale and sickly. The black, in example four, overpowers her delicate image and the lilac, in example five, is too light and bright for her medium depth value and soft chroma.
We would also advise against glittery products as these clash with your soft chroma. Matte products or those with a slight shimmer are best.
Eyeshadow
Please note, when we talk about the examples above, we point to the recommended and not recommended examples in two sections of six. This is colours one to three and four and six across two rows. For example, the third circle you see in recommended colours is followed by the fourth in the row below - not that adjacent to it.
The general advice for eyeshadow is to use a complementary colour - one which is on the opposite side of the colour wheel to your eye colour. As Amber has green eyes, purple eyeshadow is particularly effective as seen in image four of the 'recommended' examples.
However, we have to ensure the shade matches her hue, chroma and depth as well as her contrast level. This is why we see the lilac in image five of the 'not recommended' examples before we see her. It does not balance her because it is too cool, bright and light.
Green eyeshadow also works well for her as demonstrated in images one (soft green) and two (teal blue) of the 'recommended' examples. This is because the shades are similar to her eye colour in both hue and value. Compare this effect to the mint green we see in image two of the 'not recommended' eyeshadows. Again, we see the colour before we see Amber. It doesn't create balance.
The remaining two images (three - reddish brown, and six - warm pink) show how medium depth and warm colours are effective. Note that the reddish brown is matte whereas the warm pink has a slight shimmer. As with eyeliner, we advise against glittery products as these clash with Warm Autumn's soft chroma. However, they can make use of minimal shimmer.
Though we would advise against the glittery options, a palette such as DE'LANCI Green Eyeshadow would give you a good range of greens, teals and reddish browns to practice your combinations with. Alternatively, a warm neutrals palette like NYX Ultimate shadow palette gives you more colours to experiment with.
You may like to use an eyeshadow primer. However, the Maybelline Instant Anti Age Eraser Eye Concealer we advised for complexion makeup also acts as a great base. Ensure you blend it thoroughly using a concealer brush before applying your eyeshadow to avoid a cakey finish.
If you look at rows one and two of the 'not recommend' eyeshadows, you can see that these light, cool and bright colours do not work for Amber.
Where the blue in the first example is too light and cool, the bright colours in the second and fifth do not balance her as you see the eyeshadow before you see her face. Similarly, the fourth example makes her look pale and sickly as it is too light. If you want to use a lighter colour to highlight the inner corners of your eyes, we recommend a warmer shade such as ivory.
The third example shows a yellow eyeshadow. As a warm colour, you would think it should work but this variation is also too light and bright. It is better suited to a Bright Winter individual.
LIPS & CHEEKS
When it comes to blush and lipstick, Warm Autumn types can take advantage of the warm reds, salmon pinks and soft browns on the palette.
Blush
Depending on your individual depth, the best blush colour will vary.
Those flowing towards Dark Autumn may be able to work with the brown colours on the Warm Autumn neutral palette. However, those leaning towards Soft Autumn can try the softer pinks and oranges from the subtype's accents.
Amber has a slightly lower contrast so the pinks and oranges we have used in the first three examples are recommended. Note that these are matte products with no shimmer.
You can see how the shine in the fifth example makes her look oily. This is because it clashes with her soft chroma. The shimmer in the fourth example is more subtle but it is the light and bright pink colour that blanches her appearance.
Finally, the brown in the sixth example is too dark for her. No amount of blending would make it look any less dramatic. She could perhaps try lighter browns with golden tones.
LIPSTICK
The first three examples demonstrate how soft orange, terracotta and muted mauve work well for Amber. If you lean towards Dark Autumn, you may be able to make use of warm brown variations too.
Matte lipsticks, or those with a subtle lustre, are best suited for Warm Autumn as anything glossy or shimmery will clash with their soft chroma. You can use a lip scrub and moisturising balm as part of your daily skincare regime to avoid any dryness that ensues with use of matte products.
Lipsticks colours we do not recommend are bright, light and cool. Where the red example in image four overpowers Amber, the dark brown in image five is harsh against her delicate image. The purple in the final example is far too bright for her soft chroma.
