light summer
This subtype is the fairest of the Summer season. Their colours are mixed with white to lighten and blue to cool, which creates a playful palette filled with pastel hues reminiscent of fruit sorbet.
characteristics
Light Summer is found between Light Spring and Cool Summer on the seasonal flow. This subtype features a low to moderate contrast level meaning their best colours resemble those in their own palette in either hue or value. Their palette includes cool pastels like seafoam green, raspberry pink and lemon yellow.

CONTRAST
Light Summer individuals have very low levels of contrast due to the fairness across their features. This blend which is created by light skin, light hair and light eyes is reduced further by the softened chroma across their image. Depending on the individual's natural appearance, they may have a naturally matte or sheer complexion, grey pigmentation in their eyes and a glistening hair shine.

SKIN TONE
Despite their fair appearance, we see Light Summer individuals with fair through to medium depth skin tones. This may have blue or pink undertones but can also be neutral, which means we will see either green or purple veins beneath the skin. As such, cool metals will always be more effective but they may be able to wear light gold as well. These individuals tend to burn easily.

EYES
Typical examples of eye colours we see across Light Summer include azure, blue, light brown, green and grey hazel. However, any colour which is somewhat light and cool is possible. Due to Summer's muted influence, these colours tend to have a touch of grey pigmentation. We may also see soft separation on the outer iris edge as well as a pattern resembling crackled glass or flower petals on the inner section.

HAIR
In keeping with their ethereal image, Light Summer individuals have fair hair. Blondes are very light through to dark but we don't see anything deeper than a light brunette. These colours tend to be cool with ash tones. However, as they border Spring, it is not uncommon to see a mix of golden, honey or strawberry tones as well. They also tend to have glistening finishes.

colour palette
Light Summer colours take influence from the sensory delights of Old Havana. The sun is warm but not overwhelming, casting delicate shadows across the pastel-coloured buildings, weathered facades and mosaic tiles. The scent of your coconut ice cream mingles with the salty ocean breeze. You can hear the rhythm of son Cubano spilling from a nearby café and the distant hum of classic cars painted in vibrant shades of turquoise and pink.

metals
Light Summer, as a neutral subtype, has the versatility to wear warm metals, but cool metals like silver and white gold refine and sharpen their delicate image. Lighter, brushed finishes are more suitable as depth is jarring against a fair appearance and shiny finishes look unnatural. It’s also important to avoid antique or hammered finishes as they tend to look heavy.

neutrals
Light Summer individuals cannot wear true black as it is too stark against their delicate appearance. Light cool greys and taupes are more suitable. Similarly, grey-tinged shades of white and pinkish beiges are better than pure white. This bright neutral is harsh on light subtypes and can blanch the appearance making them look pale and unwell.

accents
Due to its neutral-cool hue, the Light Summer palette contains more blues, greens and purples. These include sky blue, teal green and strawberry pink. However, there are yellows with a subtle hint of both white and blue to both lighten and cool them. Warmer accents should be balanced with cool jewellery options.

combinations
As their contrast level is low to moderate, colour combinations need to reflect what is in the Light Summer individual’s natural palette. In the first two examples, we have shown how neighbouring hues on the colour chart pair well. Similarly, you can select multiple colours of varying depths from one column to create a monochromatic mix, as shown in the last two examples. Alternatively, light accents can be paired with dark neutrals to achieve a similar effect. This is what we have demonstrated in the third and fourth examples.

colours to borrow
Depending on which way the Light Summer individual flows, they may be able to borrow colours from neighbouring Light Spring or Cool Summer. Light Spring has a neutral-warm hue so people with Light Summer colouring will need to select the cooler hues from this palette as shown above. In comparison, Cool Summer has a dominantly cool hue so Light Summer individuals will need to select the lighter, warmer colours from this palette such as the pinks and yellows. Please note, the colour codes marked with an asterisk above are taken from the Light Spring and Cool Summer sample palettes respectively.

colours to avoid
As a light and cool subtype, Light Summer’s worst colours are dark and warm, such as those seen in Dark Autumn. The warm shades in the examples above overpower June, casting shadows on her face and giving her a yellow tinge. This demonstrates that they are not suitable for her delicate appearance. Again, the colour codes above marked with an asterisk are taken from the Dark Autumn sample palette.
